What Do You Like About Florida?

There was a story in the Orlando Sentinel about negative survey results from residents of Florida that basically was a laundry list of things that are bad about living in Florida. So, being a fanatic son of Florida who’s first inclination is to tell those “she-ca-go owned carpetbagger journalists to pack up and leave already iffin’ they don’t like it here.” But, since I’m not one to miss an opportunity to complain about the bad aspects either, I figure it would be more constructive to start a discussion into what is good about living here. I mean, I only complain about the bad because I love this state so much and I want all aspects of it to be better. So, if you are reading this, then you most likely live here for some reason or have some interest in the Sunshine State, so sound off. What do you like about Florida?

(Let’s keep it to what you LIKE about Florida, not extend the original article. If you want to hop on the bash Florida dog-pile, then go hit up the Sentinel’s Topix thread about it.)

I’ll kick it off with: Natural Beauty. Every place has their share of billboards and concrete jungle, but when you pull off main street here you don’t see dusty clay roads cutting through endless stretches of treeless prairie. You get lush green explosions of tropical flora and fauna. Water dots the landscape everywhere and mighty oaks and tall pines give way to palms, mangroves and sandy dunes alongside endless beaches. Plus, it’s the fishing capital of the world, period.

Though the print article has neat-o graphics and charts.

The weather … sure, it rains, we have hurricanes, not to mention the humidity that stops you in your tracks during the summer. But you really learn to appreciate it all when it’s January, -10 degrees out and you’re having to shovel five inches of snow off your car just so you can break in through the iced up door and try to start it.

And I know people like to slag the theme parks, but I really enjoy them. Nothing like having the day off and going on Mission:Space a few times, or riding The Mummy to have some fun.

I also enjoy the music scene – lots of great bands to check out.

Thanks for finding that link. I dug all around the site’s story lists but couldn’t see it. Probably hiding in plain site to my eyes!

It’s GREEN! All the time, no matter what. In most states, 6 months out of the year, the world is gray, white, and dingy brown. There are no leaves on the trees and certainly no flowers. That is never the case in Florida! Something is always blooming!

I love the wildlife. I drive over the 417 bridge a lot and count the gators in Lake Jessup. I love the variety of birds from hawks to kingfishers to robins in winter.

I second the weather, and I like the vibe–I think it’s a nice mix of laid-back and energetic around here. People are awful nice, too.

Also, I do have one thing I must complain about–not the state, but the Sentinel’s survey write-up, which I felt took a few too many leaps in interpreting the data as negatively as possible. If you look closely, there’s at least one case where the stats are identical from 2006 to 2007–but of course, to the Sentinel, the opinions were trending downward. I meant to fully whine about this yesterday in a post, but ran out of time. :)
