Daytona’s Extreme Makeover

Sorry, but I’m not quite over this Daytona thing yet…

I hadn’t been there in years (three, to be exact). If I’m going to the beach, I infinitely prefer Clearwater or some of the hidden little parks along U.S. 19 on the Gulf Coast. But Daytona is lots of fun in a seedy, beach-town kind of way. A little sun, a little sleaze, and you’ve pretty much got a description of the downtown!

Or do you?

Here are a few shots of new things that surprised me around Daytona Beach. In a sick way, I’m kind of sad to see it all tarted up–it’s like when you meet an old friend from high school who used to be so insane that he always put a smile on your face, and ten years later you discover the guy became a lawyer with two kids and a 3-bedroom ranch in the suburbs. Dull. I guess I’m glad Daytona’s becoming a (slightly) more respectable town, but I hope it doesn’t lose its…shall we say, UNIQUE personality?

But then, Daytona’s got personality to spare. :)

And then there are things that DON’T change:

(Good Lord, that’s even a high-class Harley shop! What universe is this??)
