National Bike Month is almost over

May is National Bike Month, and it

The Miracle Of the Carp?

A religious revival of some sort has sprung up near the corner of 436 and Curry Ford. I saw it while I was driving home from work last week. It’s a makeshift tent with chairs underneath. A nearby sign reads “El Milagro De La Carpa,” translated as “The Miracle Of the Carp.” A couple of nights, I’ve seen large groups of people there, singing or listening to a preacher.

It seems a strange place for a revival, on a busy street known for its strip malls and auto lots.

I wonder what the miracle of the carp is. Perhaps it’s an allusion to Jesus feeding the multitudes with a few fish and loaves of bread? The Bible didn’t specify that the fish were carp, but…well, I’m curious about this carp now.

I’m Not The Only One…

…who thought oranges were ALREADY our state fruit. Even the Governor assumed it was so.

It took a group of fourth graders to realize the oversight and officials immediately jumped on getting a bill passed, which Governor Bush took directly to the school to sign today.

Did you think the same thing? Are you surprised to learn after all this time, the orange is now officially the state fruit?

Staaaaar Waaars… nothing but Star Wars!

Come on, people! The event of the year is a-happenin’ and no one’s blogging about it. Let’s hear those Star Wars standing-in-crazy-ass-line stories!!

Our date with density is tomorrow night at 8:30.

Free Frosty!!!

I know everyone has heard about the ‘finger in the chili’ incident at Wendy’s. Due to slumping sales in the aftermath, they are giving away a free frosty all weekend with no coupon or purchase required!

I haven’t had a frosty in quite some time. This weekend, I believe I’ll be having several. Go get yours!

Doctors Attribute Baby Boom To Last Year’s Hurricanes

Perhaps this is why families used to be so huge back in the ‘old days’?

Go on, admit it… did this happen to you too?

UCF Greens Up

UCF has taken a lot of flack locally from those of us who strive to protect the Econlockhatchee River Basin and the surrounding wetlands. However, they have also worked to try and keep some semblance of balance with the eco-system even while dilgently working to pave it over.

One advance: the new green roof on the new wing of the Student Union building. It keeps cooling costs down, reduces waste run-off into the soil and provides a beautiful rooftop garden view.

Good for them and good for us. Now, if they can just keep up with the exploding student population and provide them on campus housing…

What Will It Take?

A Mason-Dixon poll released earlier today revealed that a quarter of the people questioned along the East and Gulf coasts didn’t feel any fear of hurricanes, would take minimal steps to secure their homes and felt they could safely evacuate with 30 minutes to an hour’s notice.

Florida residents who are currently residing in some 15,000 mobile homes and travel trailers provided by FEMA across the state as emergency housing may have a different reaction to those questions.

Top High Schools in the US

nw_leftnavcov_050516.jpg
I was reading a Newsweek article today about the best high schools in the nation. Very provacative article when you consider that these young people are our future.

Anyway, I started to look through the list of the schools and noticed one major glaring fact about Orlando. We didn’t have ONE in the top 1000 schools. BUT… Altamonte, Oviedo, Celebration, Kissimmee, Longwood… all of these did. Interesting how all of the burbs have a highly ranked school, but even schools like Dr. Phillips or Olympia or Winter Park didn’t make it in the top 1000.

Having teenagers and soon to be teenagers, I’m rather concerned about my choices for education based on this article. What do you think? Is this list unfair? Is it a true reflection of our school system here? Would you move to get your child a better education?

The Picture Show at Altamonte

FREE MOVIES!

OK, not really. But damned close. All this week, the Picture Show at Altamonte is charging 25 cents for admission. We just came back from seeing a good movie–The Aviator–but for 25 cents who cares? If you can actually afford to go to the movies, then it’s not such a disaster if you wind up seeing something bad.

The Picture Show is another attempt to re-open the 8-screen theater in the Renaissance Plaza near the Altamonte Mall. It was called “Altamonte 8″ and the signs still say that in places, as well. They’re going to do second-run movies and some art house stuff, using extremely low ticket prices as bait. Regular admission will be $1.50 after 6pm with 75-cent matinees and 50-cent Tuesdays.

CORRECTION: The theater we went to was Altamonte 8. There are apparently TWO cut-rate movie theaters charging 25-cent admission this week! The Picture Show is in the plaza next to I-4, near Gold’s Gym.
