Southern Nights No More

Southern Nights, Orlando’s most popular gay nightclub, is now closed. It was sold to another owner, who will be closing the bar for renovations. I heard the news from a friend who works there. The new owner may want to keep the original staff. Either way, the place is going to be closed for a few months and the employees are now out of work. I feel bad for them. This seemed really sudden.

It needed some renovations… your shoes stick to the carpet. Will they still cater to the same clientele?

I pass this place all the time. Wonder what it will look like when it’s done. Bummer for the employee’s though.

I had a conversation about this with my source last Wednesday, before the closure. The bottom line with the staff was basically the uncertainty of it all. Everyone had a lot of questions that, at the time, we left unanswered. While it is true that the employees were told they would absolutely have jobs waiting for them, many of them cannot afford to wait around for that possibility.

Southern has been in need of renovations for more years than I have been going, but I had hoped those conducted during the day and on Sunday’s over the past months would be the solution, allowing everyone to retain their livelihood.

My source stated that the new look of Southern was to be more upscale, but retaining its home-town feel. Plasma televisions, structural repairs, new HVAC, lighting and sound systems were also discussed.

In the end, it will be interesting to see what exactly happens and if Southern’s heartbeat — Dean, Ejay, Cindi, James, Juan, Kat and everyone else — will return.

I was shocked to see it closed. It is sad because it was the only really gay club in Orlando. We’ve seen so many things disappear from rainbow city to out and about books. Our gay community is so large, i don’t understand why all these things are going away. Southern nights was the first club i went to as a gay woman. Now ,what will become of it.I hope the new owners keep it real.

I agree with Brandi, it was a place where you could go because it was comfortable, very relaxed. An old friend..who is always there…but remember guys, it sold because of change… change is good, and maybe it was time for our old friend to have a little nip and tuck.. I still believe in tradition, and hopefully we will always have our “Southern Nights”!!! :-) Peace..

I am so excited to see my favorite hang out renovated. It is about time someone took the intitative to do something about the oldest gay night club in Orlando. Just from the rumors I keep hearing it is going to be upscale yet very comfortable, having plasma TV’s, better lighting, new carpet (that alone will bring me back) what more could we as a gay community ask for. I don’t even care about the employees, bartenders are a dime a dozen and as long as southern employes cute, sexy ones I will be there dancing my butt off and drinking to my fill.

I am so excited that the nightclub I go to is being renovated. I am glad that someone took the initative to fix that place, I mean it is the oldest gay night club in Orlando. From the rumors I keep hearing (from a very reliable source mind you) it is going to have better lighting, plasma tv’s, new dance floor, what else could we as a gay community want. I feel a little sorry for the employees, but lets face it they were getting pretty tired. All I know is that as long as they hire cute, sexy bartenders my butt will be there dancing and drinking to my fill. I say CHEERS to the new owners!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think changes are in order. First of all, several years back, they had some of the sexiest male strippers. Now, for the past year, they’ve had one. The SAME one! Come on! All you really need are sexy dudes strip-teasing every Friday and Tuesday nights.Bring back Paige for amatuer strip night, too. And it wouldn’t hurt if Ejay would bartend without a shirt! WOOF!

I think Ejay should have to work without a shirt. WOOF!

Southern is now due to open again! Gay days is right around the corner and Southern will be open as usual for gay days. It is still unknown as to whats going on on which days, and many changes have been made on the inside and to the staff. I know latin night, wed, and fri are returning, w/ a different kind of ladies night returning to Sat. I dont work there but am very close to one of the employees who was brought back. Hope to see everyone there! Cant wait to get back to that hot sweaty feeling.
