Orlando Mayor Dyer Turns Himself In

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer was indicted Friday morning in an election fraud scandal that arose after the mayoral election last year.

Dyer turned himself into the Orange County Jail just after 8:30 a.m., WESH NewsChannel 2 reported.

An arrest warrant was issued Thursday night. At issue is whether Dyer’s campaign staff illegally paid people to collect absentee ballots, particularly among the city’s minority communities. Dyer is facing one count of third-degree felony of vote fraud directly related to campaign worker Ezzie Thomas’ activities.

A grand jury handed up a total of four indictments Thursday afternoon.

Orange County Circuit Judge Alan Apte also turned himself in at the jail a few minutes before Dyer. Apte faces charges of breaking state election laws.

Patty Sharp, who managed Dyer’s re-election campaign, was also indicted. Her attorney said he believes it was inappropriate to indict her after she cooperated with the grand jury.

Apte allegedly paid Ezzie Thomas, a campaign worker, to collect votes during the judicial race in 2002. Thomas worked for Apte and Dyer in the mayor’s race. The fourth indictment is believed to pertain to Thomas, who admitted getting paid thousands of dollars to collect absentee ballots for Dyer.

The Florida Constitution gives Gov. Jeb Bush the authority to suspend elected municipal officials. A temporary replacement could be appointed as Orlando mayor. However, the Constitution does not require the governor to suspend elected officials.

WESH NewsChannel 2 political analyst Dick Batchelor said a lot of business at Orlando City Hall could come to a standstill as key players lose political clout. Plus, Batchelor said a political scandal of this scale is unprecedented in Orlando.

Ken Mulvaney lost the election to Dyer. Mulvaney filed a civil suit seeking to have a run-off election because of his allegations of fraud.

Hm, I really never thought anything would come of this.. I wonder what will happen now. I suppose it’s unlikely he will really serve jail time.

Chubby guy – (too many business lunches) – with a name like “Buddy” who suddenly wants to start building new arenas and stadiuums in Orlando – when they can’t even fill the ones they have — — Must be corrupt! Let’s elect Paddy Mulvaney and see if he can do better! Maybe they’ll start selling Guinness at the Orena!!

Whoever becomes are new Mayor of Orlando, needs to keep the growth coming. What is wrong with growth? Growth needs to happend in this city. This city has SO MUCH potential and they have waisted time. Whoever is mayor needs to try keep the Orlando Magic In Orlando. Also renovate the Citrus Bowl to keep the bowl games in Orlando. Oh By They Way TOURIST TAX MONEY CAN ONLY BE USED FOR SPORT FACILITEIS, NOT SCHOOLS OR ROADS.

    Go Magic

Whoever is Mayor needs to try keep the growth coming in Orlando. Downtown needs to grow. We needs to build a new arena. Not just for the Magic but it will be a center peace of the downtown revitilization. By the way tourist tax money can ONLY be used for sport facilites, NOT SCHOOLS OR ROADS. So if you are going to vote please know the facts.

If you want to be a big city you need professional sports. Downtown could be a beautiful place. It needs to keep growing. Sports is essential for growth. Also its not going to cost us anything. We are going to use tourist tax(which can only be used for sport facilities, it can’t be used for schools or roads)
