Vote Smart!

One of the things that annoys the hell out of me in Florida is its constitutional amendment process. In my not-so-humble opinion, the constitution is supposed to be a framework for government, not a detailed laundry list of specific issues. As I wrote in 2002, why do we continue to allow special interest groups to scrape up (or buy) enough petition signatures to be able to ram a bazillion amendments to the constitution onto our ballots? Especially when the first time most people have even seen them is when they open up their War&Peace-like ballots on election day!

At least this time, you can try and be informed about what you’re voting on by going to VoteSmartFlorida.org and checking out their voter guide. They list each of the proposed amendments, along with who is for it and who is against it and why. Then, in plain, non-partisan language, they tell you what happens if you vote “yes” and what happens if you vote “no.”

THANK YOU! I’ve been looking for something like this… even though I already mailed out my absentee ballot this morning, I still want to know if I ‘guessed’ correctly on the amendments. [just kidding]

I’ve been bitching about the whole pregnant pigs BS in constitution for years. People actually argue with me. It’s not that I’m not sympathetic to pregnant pigs – believe me – it’s just that the constitution is *not* the place for what by all rights should just be a plain ‘ol law.

Well I’m glad to see someone else confessing ignorance to new amendments to the constitution! For years I kept thinking I was an uninvolved citizen or I would know about these things. And I totally agree Solonor… we shouldn’t put every petty issue into the consitution. Thank you for this informative webiste!!

Great site! Now I just need to find one for Mississippi. Since moving here I have no idea what’s on the ballot. I know I am sick and tired of seeing all the Bush signs, though. x(
